"An Amazing Case of Barratry on the High Seas"

"A Million in Gold."
By Alfred Lester (1874-1925).
First appearance: Collier's Weekly, March 10, 1928.
Short short short story (2 pages).
Online at UNZ (HERE).

"The real story of a crime that was too perfect to be true and of the detective who discovered it."
For Jordan, the detective, there's just enough satisfaction in solving this crime to ameliorate his disappointment at missing a company-paid trip to Buenos Aires: "If I went away for a month, you'd have ample time to move that stuff. And maybe I wouldn't come back."

- Along with FictionMags, we're assuming, perhaps wrongly, that this "Alfred Lester" was the stage performer whose career straddled the late 19th and early 20th centuries; see Wikipedia (HERE) for more about that individual.
